How To: Use iTunes & CDDB

It looks like the process Mike R. describes below will save each of us a bunch of time down the road. There's a minor bit of work you'll need to do up front, and you'll need to use iTunes if you don't already, but if everyone does it then it saves time for everyone else!

  1. Burn your Salmagundi CD copies as usual through iTunes;
  2. Before ejecting the last copy of your disc (which should have all of the track information listed) go to the "Advanced Menu" and click on "Submit CD Track Names";
  3. In the dialogue box that pops up, enter "Various Artists" as the artist, fill in the Genres (optional) and list the album name as "Salmagundi [##] - [Your Name]";
  4. Make sure you select "Compilation CD", otherwise all of your artist names will be replaced by "Various Artists";
  5. Click "OK"

This will upload your CD information to the Gracenote CD database. Thus, when the rest of us load your CD, we'll be treated to all of your disc's artist and song infomation without having to re-type it! To some extent, this will also save me a lot of time re-typing in each person's track listings for this here blog.

Though I don't use iTunes (sorry, Apple, but I don't like your music software...), I do have access to GraceNote through the software I do use, so I'll try to do it this way. Apologies in advance if it doesn't work.

If we type in the lyrics will they get ported over, too?

Stef - I don't know if there is a place to type in lyrics on the iTunes info screen or in CDDB. Plus? That's a lot of work, yo!

1. In iTunes 5 or later, select a favorite song.
2. From the File menu, choose Get Info.
3. Click Lyrics, then enter the words to the song in the text box (just use Google to get the lyrics).
4. Click OK when finished.

though todays announcements were limited to the Apple TV and the kick @$$ iPhone… rumors say that Gracenote is going to soon be including lyrics with their service, and iTunes is also to include this feature. Yay!

I must be the only person in the world who, while impressed by the iPhone's kick ass touch-screen technology, truly doesn't want one. I mean, Apple's laughable "customer service" and shoddy product "reliability" matched with Cingular's "reception" and call drop ratio? All for ONLY $700 not including Apple Care and monthly Cingular fees and internet connectivity fees and whatever else they choose to nickel and dime you on?

No, thank you.

me likey. me want. but me no have $500 to drop on one.

to tell the truth marcus, your "ibook hell" story is the only blight against their customer service and product reliability i can really come up with offhand...

(though your story is certainly heinous enough to justify your position on the issue).

They've had a few bumps in the road here and there, but have been consistently rated at the top of the heap (with sony) for reliability and customer satisfaction. Their numbers have even gone up the last few years.

As for cingular... they were shite in boston, but are fine over here in upstate new york...

Now if the iPhone only had a 60+ gig HD, i'd be all over that geekstrosity!

Yeah. My iBook. Also? Re: the iPod settlement that took place two years ago? I _still_ haven't gotten my iPod battery replacement _INSTRUCTIONS_. Seriously. After about two years of waiting and emails back and forth I finally just gave up and took the $50 consolation prize (mind you, this iPod cost $50 and now no longer works without a plug) - and two months later? Still nothing.

I was going to use that gift certificate for a shuffle for Xmas, thinking it would only take them, I don't know, A STAMP!!!!!!, to mail the thing. It's a goddamn piece of PAPER. You could EMAIL ME the code, assholes...

Fuckin' Apple went out of its way to disown me. And I was, like, their fucking poster boy for YEARS. I will never, EVER buy into their hype again.

I'll still get the shuffle, though.

Can you send the tracks to Gracenote after the CD has already been burned? Because if Mercurio puts the CD in my computer, I can do it through iTunes, in case his way doesn't work. We'd have to type it up once ourselves of course...

Also, I've never heard this infamous iBook story, and now I am intrigued.
